Check out Air Niugini's Domestic Tuesday Specials

PAPUA New Guinea’s national flag carrier, Air Niugini, is offering incredible discounts every Tuesday for domestic travelers.

According to a November 2020 Air Niugini media release, the specials are published at 0900 hours every Tuesday.  Air Niugini email subscribers and Facebook followers are the first to be alerted.  Fares have gone as low as PGK19 with a limited travel window, terms and conditions apply.  See the Air Niugini Facebook page and the Air Niugini latest offers page

The Tuesday special saver has sparked a massive interest in domestic travel, especially with the lingering restrictions to international inbound travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many PNG residents have taken advantage of the slashed prices and visited places in PNG that would have been too expensive to travel to on a normal fare.

The Tourism Promotion Authority CEO Mr. Eric Mossman Uvovo commended Air Niugini for its Tuesday Specials and discounted fares.  “These airfare discounts come at a critical time when our tourism industry is struggling to fill rooms, book seats and sell tours,” he said.  He further encouraged more PNG residents to take advantage of the reduced fares and explore the country while the opportunity was around.

Local tour operators in East New Britain, have capitalized on the rise in domestic travel due to Air Niugini’s discounted airfares, and are heavily promoting affordable tour packages that can be enjoyed by local and expatriate residents.

In the land of ‘A Million Different Journeys’ Papua New Guinea is proving to be an ideal place for local travelers.

The 2021 Tourism Calendar of Events

THE beginning of 2020 was the most challenging year for tourism in Papua New Guinea and across the globe.  Especially with border closures, travel restrictions, cancelled bookings and a multitude of issues that severely hurt our tourism industry.

However, in the last quarter of the year in Papua New Guinea, event organizers in our tourism industry have sought ways to still bring people together in a safe and comfortable environment to celebrate, share common interests and enjoy life.

“If there is ever an industry as hopeful and resilient, it is our Papua New Guinean tourism industry,” said TPA CEO Mr. Eric Mossman Uvovo.  He added, “PNG is a challenging place to do business and the tourism industry have survived it all, even this COVID-19 pandemic.  Our people are still traveling and spending money within the economy.  This is the result of our tourism industry working together”.

Independence celebrations, craft markets, cultural performances and a variety of other events took place without issues.  Events like the Karimui Show in Simbu,  Break Free PNG Boera Experience, Sogeri Pineapple Festival in the Central Province and the Sepik Culture and Agriculture Show revived the nation’s event scene, proving people in PNG could still come together to celebrate even in the shadow of a global pandemic.

A slew of events are expected for the 2021 Tourism Events Calendar.  Event organizers are offering PNG residents and visitors the opportunity to be a part of their special celebrations.  Click on the Cultural Show Calendar and Industry Events Calendar on the TPA website.

Next year in 2021, experience something new and exciting like a cultural show.  Paint your face another tribal color, dance the Weipa at the Hagen Show, witness a sacred dance at the National Mask Festival and Warwagira, paddle with warriors in a war canoe at the National Kenu and Kundu Festival, pet a live ‘pukpuk’ at the Sepik River Crocodile and Arts Festival, or sample the world’s best tasting coffee at the Goroka Show, there is literally so much to see and do in the land of a million different journeys.

Enga Show Goes On

The Enga Cultural Show Committee has announced that the 2020 Enga Show is all set to go ahead as planned from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th August at the Aipus Rugby Field in Wabag.

Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas said, “The Enga Cultural Show has grown to become an important part of the annual cycle of Enga Province over the past 25 years. Only 1% of people who come to the show are from outside. It is the people’s show first and foremost and the people of Enga are as eager as ever to unite and display their authentic traditional culture.”

Enga responded with swiftness at the announcement of the first Covid-19 virus in PNG in March, closing its borders to outsiders and stopping all FIFO workers from coming to the Pogera Mine within just days. Enga’s Governor put in an astonishing amount of mileage travelling by road across the province, to personally address communities and kick start what has become an on-going awareness campaign.

Dr Betty Koka, Director of Public Health with the Enga Provincial Health Authority, who is rolling out the awareness program said, “Enga also has the advantage of being the only province in PNG that speaks the one language, making the communication of health messages travel much further, faster in a country where word of mouth is still the main way to spread awareness messages.”

The Enga Governor said, “The Covid-19 Pandemic has affected the tourism industry globally. But it also presents an opportunity for Papua New Guineans who might have been planning to travel overseas to instead turn inward and support our country’s tourism industry. We would like to welcome people from other provinces come to Enga to see our authentic cultural displays, experience our pure environment, enjoy our famous fresh food produce and the hospitality of our friendly people.”

Enga Cultural Show Committee Chairlady and Director of Commerce, Culture and Tourism, Margaret Potane said, “With the cancellation of the 2020 Mt Hagen & Goroka Show, Enga will be the only Highlands show to go ahead this year and have we have launched the “Lukim Ples Pastaim/See Home First” campaign, calling for all Papua New Guineans and PNG residents to come and experience authentic Engan and Highlands culture and hospitality.”

“This year we will scale down the number of singsing groups to 30 and we already have singsing groups coming in to register from all our districts. Our famous display of ancient rituals, traditional skills, crafts and art will also still go on.”

“We will also be staging a number of show program side events, including an art exhibition, the Enga Fashion Fair, sand painting workshops and the Tasting Enga dinner”, Mrs Potane said.

The show committee plans to announce 2020 the show theme and full program in the next month.

Papua New Guinea 360 Virtual Reality Tourism Video Out Now

PAPUA New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority launched an exciting destination video captured in 360 virtual reality at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby, Monday 22nd July.

The launch of the 360 VR video was part of the inaugural ‘Promoting PNG Positively Online’ event sponsored by PNGTPA and co-hosted with Trostle Films, the team behind the development and production of the PNG 360-VR video.

The ‘Promoting PNG Positively Online’ event was a bold step at initiating discussions about addressing the negative perceptions PNG has as a travel destination and how Papua New Guineans can all be tourism ambassadors by using their online presence to create positive content about the country.

Guest speakers at the event included: Miss Pacific Islands Leoshina Kariha, Trostle Films film director Micah Trostle, digital marketing entrepreneur Ian Hetri, popular music sensation Anslom, local tour operator Florence Bunari, photographer and media marketer Autu Autu, and general manager of Walindi Plantation Resort Cheyne Benjamin.

“PNGTPA is embarking on new and creative ways to market and promote Papua New Guinea. We’ve found it’s not enough to simply talk about our destination, or show them brochures or try and install some big billboards and all those traditional ways of marketing and promoting a destination.

“Destination marketing has changed drastically over the past few years. This 360 VR project is a new promotional tool for us and we aim to share more videos through this innovative new medium,” said Jerry Agus, CEO of PNG Tourism Promotion Authority.

The ‘Promoting PNG Positively Online’ event and 360 VR tourism video launch is a culmination of a four-week long project PNGTPA had undertaken with Trostle Films.

PNGTPA and the Trostle Films team, led by 20-year old film director Micah Trostle, filmed in Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Western Highlands, Enga, East New Britain and New Ireland.

Since posting the video on Facebook on July 22nd, the Papua New Guinea tourism 360 VR video has received over 300,000 views. PNGTPA will be sharing the video on YouTube as well as their official travel website: www.papuanewguinea.travel

Farewell PNG’s Last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel

04 January 2018

PRESS RELEASE

THE Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority is greatly saddened by the passing of one of the last known Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels of the Battle of the Kokoda Track.

The late Havala Laula was the iconic figure head and living image of the historical Kokoda Track until his passing on Christmas Eve at his Kagi Village along the track, he was 92 years old.

PNGTPA Chief Executive Officer Mr Jerry Agus said late Laula’s passing brings to a close an enduring chapter of the Kokoda Track, especially its affection and historical bond with the Australian people.

“He gave sole and meaning to the legend of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels especially for the thousands of Australians that walk the Kokoda Track every year,” said Mr Agus.

The name, Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, was a term of endearment Australian troops gave to the local Papua New Guinea villagers who were recruited during the Second World War to bring supplies to Australian troops and to evacuate injured soldiers.

Mr Agus said it was not only fitting but indeed sad that the late Laula lived to commemorate the 75thAnniversary of the Battle of the Kokoda Track before closing an incredible chapter in PNG’s war history.

He said as a popularly recognised Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, the late Laula participated in major Kokoda 75thAnniversary commemoration programs including the movie “Fuzzy Wuzzy – Beyond the Legend” where he was featured prominently.

“The Kokoda Track and indeed the tourism sector in PNG have lost a major icon and tourism ambassador. Those that have been privileged to walk the Kokoda Track and have been honoured to make late Laula’s acquaintance will forever treasure those memories,” he said.

Mr Agus said PNG tourism, especially the Kokoda Track was greatly indebted to the late Laula as he had given life and meaning to the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and had raised the profile of the track through numerous marketing and promotional programs in PNG and Australia.

Mr Agus thanked the family of the late Havala Laula and the Koiari people along the Kokoda Track corridor for giving PNG tourism a truly remarkable man and the last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel standing.
