Frangipani Festival
The Rabaul Frangipani Festival is an event proudly commemorated by the residents of Rabaul, East New Britain, as they remember the community spirit involved in rebuilding Rabaul Town after the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions that reduced one of the country's prominent townships to ash - destroying property and displacing hundreds.
The frangipani is the signature bloom of Rabaul - one of the first flowers to blossom amongst the volcanic ash. It is a symbol of hope for many residents.
Highlights of the Frangipani Festival include cultural dances, float parades and canoe racing. The event is always an exciting time filled with joy and camaraderie.
Date: An annual two-day event held during the week of the PNG Independence Day anniversary in September.
