Milne Bay played a significant role in World War II history. American and Australian forces were based in Milne Bay from May 1942. When the war in the Pacific escalated and the Japanese navy started moving south, two battles ensued in Milne Bay, which altered the course of the war.
In May 1942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, allied forces turned back the Japanese after an intensive battle in the skies. Three months later, a second attempt saw the Japanese troops land at Ahioma. After twelve days, the Australian army defeated the invading troops.

Dixie’s Bungalows provides accommodation and dining along the Sogeri Road at 17 Mile.
A great stop-over for a delicious meal while driving up to Sogeri, and just a kilometer or so from the Varirata National Park.
Local favorites on the menu are the T-Bone Steak, Chicken Lemon, Baked Fish, and Lamb Mint & Korma.
Tharapiyap Lodge is the perfect and convenient accommodation for your business and/or vacation getaway to Manus province. Tharapiyap Lodge is located on the northern edge of Lorengau town, just one street back from the waterfront and a short 10 minute walk to the CBD. It offers clean budget accommodation for short or long term guests. There is a communal kitchen and dining room for self catering or by arrangement they can cook for you. There is also a lounge with TV for you to sit and relax with other guests as well as a car hire office on site.
