The Lagaip Sangai Festival returns in 2024 to Enga Province!

Particular to this part of Enga is the Sangai – a traditional initiation ritual for young Engan men involving sacred acts, songs and dances.   Young male Engan adolescents retreat into the jungle for  a week to undergo special initiation ceremonies to prepare them for a life away from their parents.  After initiation they return to the village, and are welcomed by joyous dancing and feasting.

This will be a rare treat for event-goers to witness first-hand the sacred Sangai dances of Enga.

The Kiriwina Cultural Show is a week-long celebration of Trobriand Islands traditions, involving ‘sing sing’, dances and ritual performances.

The show’s activities will be based on the theme: ‘Restoring our Cultural Identity‘.  Threats to traditional knowledge are ever-present, therefore the show’s main aim is to involve the participation of youths and the new generation of Trobriand Islanders to participate in the event so that they may remember and appreciate their customs.

Formerly known as the ‘Milamala Yam Festival‘, the event has evolved somewhat to include cultural performers from other surrounding island communities, apart from the Trobriands.  However, guests can still expect to experience the unique yam rituals at the Kiriwina Cultural Show, as well as witness the fun-loving traditional ‘cricket dances’ and the famous Kiriwina circle dance called ‘wosi mwaya’.

Celebrate in the Trobriand Islands this July 2021.  Enjoy the culture, the delicious island food and the friendly Trobriand Islands hospitality.

Transport and accommodation in Milne Bay can be arranged by the show organizers.

The Anniversary of the Montevideo Maru tragedy marks one of the most devastating World War Two events in Australia and Papua New Guinea’s history.

When Rabaul was lost to the WWII Japanese Axis Powers, the SS Montevideo Maru set sail for Hainan Island with over a thousand passengers on board.  When it was torpedoed by an American submarine, 1,142 lives were lost: 1,054 Australian prisoners of war (178 non-commissioned officers, 667 soldiers and 209 civilians), as well as 88 Japanese crewmen.

Families of the Australian WWII POW’s who were on the Montevideo Maru will join residents in the township of Rabaul for a special commemoration service at the Montevideo Memorial Park.

Special memorial tours are also available from Rabaul Hotel

The ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Bomana War Cemetery is Papua New Guinea’s biggest dedication service to honor the ANZACs and the local militia and civilians serving Allied Forces during the world wars.

The Bomana War Cemetery is located on the outskirts of Port Moresby – less than a half-hour drive from the capital’s main central business district.

The service begins at about 4:30 am.  There will be ample security provided by the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the PNG Defence Force.  Transport can be arranged through Kokoda Track and Port Moresby tour operators.

The Gunfire Breakfast is usually organised by the Australian High Commission of Port Moresby.  The gunfire breakfast tickets must be obtained/purchased before the event and is arranged by the Australian Returned Services League Port Moresby Branch.

Papua New Guinea’s relationship with Australia and New Zealand extends to the colonial era, World War I and World War II.  The most memorable being World War II, when numerous battles raged across PNG – from Kokoda Track to Rabaul.  Many Papua New Guinean’s served as service men and women, as well as labourers assisting the allied forces, especially the legendary ANZACs – the Australian and New Zealand defense forces.

Although ANZAC Day is no longer a public holiday in PNG, special memorial services are still held every year on April 25th to commemorate the contribution of the ANZACs to our nations history.
