National Tourism
lifetime awards

Honouring the visionaries who shaped Papua New Guinea’s tourism legacy through passion, perseverance, and lifelong dedication

At the inaugural National Tourism Conference & Expo 2025, held at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby, a moment of deep reverence and gratitude echoed through the venue as Papua New Guinea honoured three towering figures in the nation’s tourism story. In a ceremony marked by emotion, reflection, and pride, the Tourism Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented posthumously to the late Max Benjamin and the late Sir Peter Barter, and personally to Bob Bates, recognising their decades-long service, innovation, and unwavering belief in PNG as a world-class tourism destination. These awards were more than just accolades—they were a national salute to three men whose life’s work not only helped to define the identity of tourism in Papua New Guinea but also inspired generations of local operators, hospitality workers, and community leaders.

Their contributions laid the foundation for the industry’s growth and resilience, especially in remote and culturally rich parts of the country where tourism became a bridge between tradition and opportunity. As their stories were shared through heartfelt tributes, video retrospectives, and the testimonies of those who knew and worked with them, the room was reminded that tourism in Papua New Guinea is not just an economic pursuit—it is a labour of love, of vision, and of cultural stewardship. Max Benjamin, Sir Peter Barter, and Bob Bates each left a legacy not just of properties or tour routes, but of philosophies deeply rooted in sustainability, respect, and the celebration of Papua New Guinea’s people and environment. The presentation of these awards stood as a powerful reflection of the conference’s theme, “Honouring Our Past, Transforming Our Future: 50 Years of PNG,” affirming the Tourism Promotion Authority’s commitment to carrying their torch forward, and ensuring their legacy continues to guide the future of tourism across the nation.
