With over 145,000 visitors annually, Port Moresby Nature Park is Papua New Guinea’s highest visited attraction, inspiring through education the guardianship of PNG’s unique natural environment.

Spread over 30 acres and located next to the University of Papua New Guinea, the park is home to over 550 native animals and hundreds of plant species, many of which are rarely seen outside of PNG.

It is PNG’s only internationally recognized Wildlife Park that sets the benchmark in PNG for tourism, animal welfare and community nature-based education.

Nature Park received a historic award at the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA) Gala Awards in 2016 for its ‘Sister Zoo Capacity Development Partnership Program’.  Then in 2018, they received a ZAA Education Award for its ‘World Wildlife Week Program’.

This year, 2021, the park again received not one, but two awards in the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA) Gala Awards. Both awards in the Small Institutions category, the Nature Park received the award in Exhibit Design for the construction of its ‘Reptile Haus’, a first of its kind in PNG. The second award was an Engagement Award for the park’s ‘Snaketastic Program’ run over two months at the Park in 2018.

The park’s popular features include: WWII Walk-Through Aviary, Tree Kangaroo Trail, Bird of Paradise Precinct, Rainforest Retreat, Cassowary Corridor, Nature’s Café and plenty more.

Take your family to a park filled with fun and adventure

The Adventure Park is  Port Moresby’s only theme park and features an assortment of rides and attractions including a delightful Ferris wheel with fine views across the plains at 14 Mile, water-slides, paddle-boats, and a colourful merry-go-round to rival Mary Poppins’ adventures.

Equally colourful is the display of native orchids found at the National Orchid Gardens at the edge of the Park. The gardens house the largest collection of orchids in the Southern Hemisphere. All year round, you can explore over three thousand orchid species, unique to Papua New Guinea. Peak flowering season for most orchids is between December and March.

Discover iconic birds and animals such as the Ragianna bird-of-paradise with its dazzling colors and plumage, the daunting saltwater crocodile, the flamboyant Victoria Crowned pigeons, and the furry tree kangaroo. Take note of the crocodile feeding time (Saturday & Sunday at 3 pm), a spectacle in itself.

There are winding pathways to other attractions like the Wildlife Sanctuary, train and man-made ponds filled with fish. You can hire rods and reels from the shop – there is a competition running and prizes awarded to those that manage to catch a tagged fish, this is a fun activity for the entire family.

Indulge in an afternoon walk in the park, one of the best ways to relax in Port Moresby.  The handsome grounds are as picturesque as they are inviting.
