The Sepik Bilum Basket Show returns for its second edition from Sunday, 12 October to Tuesday, 14 October 2025 at the GC Sir Michael Thomas Somare Stadium in Wewak, East Sepik Province. Guided by the theme “I Am My Cultural Identity,” this three-day festival celebrates the creativity and resilience of Sepik women. Their bilums and baskets—famous worldwide for intricate designs and cultural meaning—take centre stage as tradition meets empowerment.
At the same time, the show highlights an important cause. Through the Pinktober campaign, the event raises awareness of breast cancer while showcasing the strength of mothers, daughters, and young women across Sepik. As a result, visitors experience not only vibrant artistry but also a message of health, unity, and innovation.
The Sepik Bilum Basket Show goes beyond being a cultural festival—it acts as a platform for women in business. 🪶 The 2025 Kenu and Kundu Festival has been deferred to 2026.

🪶 The Bundi Komba Festival is an annual cultural event hosted by the Kumura Foundation – a local charity organisation founded by Vincent Kumura, a proud Bundi local from Madang Province.
The annual festival promotes and strengthens the cultural traditions of the Bundi people living in the furthermost interior of Madang. Some fascinating cultural performances include the Bundi Burning Head Dancers, and other dances from the villages of Emigari, Kaima Miri and more.
Sponsorship funding from the festival is used to support health outreach, medical supplies and build local infrastructure for local villages in the Bundi area.
The Bundi Komba festival promotes local traditional knowledge, especially local cuisine, celebrating highly valued traditional crops like the ‘komba’ or marita fruit, as well as an abundance of unique plant-life from the area.
Attending the festival is challenging yet rewarding, and involves taking a 4WD from either Madang or Simbu, crossing difficult terrain, then trekking through remote jungles. An above average level of fitness is required for the journey. Despite the difficulty in getting there, experiencing the festival, however, is a remarkable once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Guests will always travel in the company of the Kumura Foundation team, especially the founder, Vincent Kumura.

🪶 The 2025 Hiri Moale Festival will take place from April 3rd to 6th in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea’s capital.
This iconic festival celebrates the historic Hiri trading voyages of the seafaring Motuans of Central Province, who journeyed to the Gulf Province aboard the lakatoi—a large, multi-hulled sailing canoe. These voyages saw the Motuans trading their clay pots for sago and other traditional goods with the Gulf people. Despite the challenges of dangerous storms and rough seas, these trading journeys forged enduring friendships and lineal ties, a legacy still evident today through the Hiri Motu language.
The festival is a vibrant celebration of Motuan culture, featuring traditional songs, dances, and rituals that reflect the Hiri trade’s significance. It also honors the cultural connections between the Motuans and their historical trading partners, including the Gulf, Mekeo, Hula, and Koiari communities.

Tolai shell money in East New Britain Province is known as ‘tabu’. This traditional currency is still in use today, and is a very important feature of Tolai cultural ceremony, especially funerary rituals. The biennual Tavur Show is a celebration of West New Britain culture featuring unique traditional masks and singsings from Nakanai, Balala, Bariai, Talmalmali, Bali Vitu and more.
Tavur Show aims to promote unity and cultural appreciation for the Province in one of Papua New Guinea’s fastest growing townships, Kimbe. The theme of the show is: “We value culture as the source of our identity, strength, guidance and prosperity.”
The Show will be a five-day event hosted by the West New Britain Provincial Government, at the Bernad Vogae Memorial Park – formerly Independence Park, in the heart of Kimbe town.
There will be 30 cultural groups performing, 16 of which will be indigenous to West New Britain, while the rest will feature other cultural groups from various parts of the country.
The West New Britain cultural groups will be a special showcase and thus a real treat for show goers, because a cultural village has been developed to assist the performers carry out the sacred rituals that are required before the dances are performed.
Entry to the Show will be free, and the West New Britain Provincial Government will be ensuring the security and personal safety of all visitors at the Tavur Show.

The Lagaip Sangai Festival returns in 2024 to Enga Province!
Particular to this part of Enga is the Sangai – a traditional initiation ritual for young Engan men involving sacred acts, songs and dances. Young male Engan adolescents retreat into the jungle for a week to undergo special initiation ceremonies to prepare them for a life away from their parents. After initiation they return to the village, and are welcomed by joyous dancing and feasting.
This will be a rare treat for event-goers to witness first-hand the sacred Sangai dances of Enga.

The Kiriwina Cultural Show is a week-long celebration of Trobriand Islands traditions, involving ‘sing sing’, dances and ritual performances.
The show’s activities will be based on the theme: ‘Restoring our Cultural Identity‘. Threats to traditional knowledge are ever-present, therefore the show’s main aim is to involve the participation of youths and the new generation of Trobriand Islanders to participate in the event so that they may remember and appreciate their customs.
Formerly known as the ‘Milamala Yam Festival‘, the event has evolved somewhat to include cultural performers from other surrounding island communities, apart from the Trobriands. The Anniversary of the Montevideo Maru tragedy marks one of the most devastating World War Two events in Australia and Papua New Guinea’s history.
When Rabaul was lost to the WWII Japanese Axis Powers, the SS Montevideo Maru set sail for Hainan Island with over a thousand passengers on board. When it was torpedoed by an American submarine, 1,142 lives were lost: 1,054 Australian prisoners of war (178 non-commissioned officers, 667 soldiers and 209 civilians), as well as 88 Japanese crewmen.
Families of the Australian WWII POW’s who were on the Montevideo Maru will join residents in the township of Rabaul for a special commemoration service at the Montevideo Memorial Park.

The Firedance Festival is a special showcase of Baining culture in the East New Britain Province.
Guests are transported to Gaulim village deep in the mountains of East New Britain. Here they are welcomed with rare performances capturing Baining tribal myth and lore. Tribes from all over Baining will be a part of this rousing event.
As night descends on Gaulim, towering bonfires will be lit for one of the most spectacular dances ever witnessed in Papua New Guinea, where initiated Baining men wearing extraordinary masks and enchanted by forest spirits dance evocatively through the flames and embers.

The 4th Karkar Island Bilum Festival will be be held at Taur Sportsground on Karkar Island, Madang Province – promoting the theme: “My culture. My identity. My pride.”
Highlights of the festival include: traditional bilum pageant, singsings, live string bands, cultural knowledge showcase such as displays of bilum weaving, artwork and Karkar Island artefacts.
Meet the women of Karkar Island who are known throughout the region for their traditional bilum weaving skills. On display will be beautiful traditional bilums that follow cultural and modern designs.
Karkar Island is located 30km from the Madang Province mainland and is home to about 70,000 people.

The Hagen Show is an exciting ‘singsing‘ involving cultural groups from across the Western Highlands and other parts of the country perform traditional dances, ritual performances and feasting.
The event was first staged in 1961 before PNG’s Independence as an event to unify tribes.
Local entertainers from the modern music scene will also perform at the show. Arts and crafts will also be on display.

The Morobe Show is on during Papua New Guinea’s Independence Week celebrations in Lae, Morobe Province this year!
Over two days, Lae becomes a hub of activity as it plays host to cultural performances, community pride, and displays of hard work through big harvests in agriculture from subsistence farming through to industrial farming from the coasts, to hinterlands of Morobe Province and its border-sharing provinces.
The Morobe Show brings together an estimated number of 80,000 visitors annually. Guests can wander the crafts and food markets of Lae city and the surrounding historic and natural wonders and tourist sites.
The national airline, Air Niugini, travels five times into Lae city from the capital of Port Moresby.

🐊 The Sepik River Crocodile Festival is a three-day cultural celebration staged annually in Ambunti, East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea.

The Sepik River Crocodile Festival highlights the importance of the crocodile and its cultural significance to the people of the Sepik River.
The Sepik River is one of the largest rivers in the Asia-Pacific region and is home to some of the world’s largest freshwater and saltwater crocodile populations.
In Sepik culture men and crocodile share a special bond. The Crocodile symbolizes strength, power and manhood. Skin-cutting initiations continue in Sepik River communities where men proudly wear scars cut into their skin during the rite of passage. These scars, resembling the back of a crocodile, run from the shoulder to the hip.
Crocodiles are significant to the Sepik culture where they have cultural traditions, beliefs and legends based on this ancient animal.
The festival is held every year, August 5th – 7th.
The Karimui Show in Simbu Province celebrates the natural wonders of the Mt Karimui Conservation Area Project.
In its fourth year running, this special festival brings together local communities in the Karimui District in an effort to encourage awareness and appreciation of their natural environment.
Experience the colourful ‘singsings’ (cultural dances) and unique rituals of the Simbu people of Karimui – famous for their cane walkers, unique head-dresses and striking ceremonial face-paints.
The 2021 Karimui Show is a three-day event that will take place November 17-19.

The 2018 Bundi Culture & Flower Arrangement Show – October 5-7, will feature cultural performances from groups as far as the border regions of Simbu, Jimi, Asaro, and Bundi. Local women will also be exhibiting floral arrangements showcasing the extraordinary variety of flowers and plant life found in the Usino Bundi district of Madang.
The Bismarck Corridor Forrest Conservation & Eco-tourism Dialogue will also take place on the first day of the festival, on the 5th of October, 2018.

The Tufi Tapa and Tattoo Festival will be staged in Tufi Station, Cape Nelson in the Northern (Oro) Province.
Tapa cloth and facial tattoos are intrinsic to traditional Tufi culture. Tapa patterns and tattoo designs identify tribes and lineage in the Northern (Oro) Province and are highly respected when adorned.
Cultural performances full of color and dance will take place at the Festival. There will also be tapa preparation rituals and traditional facial tattooing showcasing the rich variety of tribal patterns of the area.
Food and Oro handicrafts will be on sale. Take home a special souvenir to remember your Tufi experience.

🪶 The 2025 Goroka Show is set for September 20th to 21st in Goroka Town, Eastern Highlands Province.
The ‘Goroka Show’ is a significant cultural event in the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is also the longest running annual cultural festival in Papua New Guinea drawing thousands of tourists to the country every year in September during the week of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.
Over a hundred tribes from all over Papua New Guinea will participate in the event performing extraordinary ‘singsings’ in a riotous display of colour and sound.
The staging of the Goroka Show began in 1957 and was first introduced and organized by Australian patrol officers known locally as ‘kiaps’.

The 2018 Jiwaka Mini Cultural Show will be staged in Jiwaka Province in the Highlands region, August 4th – 5th.
The Show will be staged in Wara Mombol in Banz Town a 40 minute drive from Mount Hagen. Proceeds from the event will go towards community projects including upgrades to primary schools and health facilities.
The Jiwaka Show is the local community’s effort to showcase its most treasured asset – its unique culture and its people.
Visitors will witness traditional cultural displays distinctive to Jiwaka culture, these include: Foot Bridge Building – A traditional bridge structure built out of forest canes and vines developed by the Jimi people.
‘Konk Numb’ or ‘Konk Gar’ – A courting ceremony between Jiwaka young men and women.Local youth are decked out in traditional finery and face paints amidst joyous dancing and singing.‘Ana Kolma’ – This lavish ceremony is a mark of new beginnings not just between a man and a woman but between tribes.Conflicts are resolved and new promises are made to strengthen families and clans.‘Kunda Kumba’ – After a funeral or the destruction of property this sombre ceremony is meant to reach a conflict resolution.
At the centre of these cultural practices is the traditional pig killing and the exchange of food and livestock. Such ceremonies are public events that involve the entire community. There will also be face painting, traditional flute playing, string bands,’ bilum’ weaving displays, performances depicting local myths and legends as well as local arts and crafts being sold.The community event is aimed at reviving and encouraging participation in Jiwaka traditional culture especially through youths with support from local families.The Jiwaka Mini Cultural Show is planned to be an annual event held every first weekend of August.
