As with most parts of Papua New Guinea, our artistic expression in the Gulf region is strong and flaunts several distinct styles. Although head-hunting has not survived the modernisation of Papua New Guinea, our main cultural items include masks, bullroarers, headrests, skull racks and gope boards. Gope boards were made for each act of bravery or successful conquest of an enemy. These elliptical boards are carved either with abstract patterns or stylised figures.

Catch a glimpse of the Gulf’s unique song and dance and the large expressive masks and head dresses at the terrific Gulf Mask Festival. It’s a new cultural show on the national events calendar, held in the middle of June in Toare, a few kilometres from the district headquarters of Kerema.
