Kalam Festival
18th - 21st September, 2023
The Kalam Festival is a rare visual treat into one of Papua New Guinea's most remote, yet renowned tribes of the interior highlands of the Madang Province.
The festival highlights the celebration of a traditional bridal ceremony, and a coming-of-age ritual for the local youths - events that involve all the communities of the Simbai valley in dancing, feasting and singing that can stretch continuously from one day to the next.
The Simbai's headdresses are most extraordinary featuring hundreds of tiny metallic green beetles that seem to shimmer in the sunlight.
Festival goers are flown into Simbai either from Mount Hagen or Madang, and are accommodated at the Kalam Guest House.
