The Beach Life

Our beaches will spoil you for life.

They really don’t get much better than this. The best surf beaches are at Hula, 100km east of Port Moresby. Surf’s up from October to April; the water is warm and our waves are uncrowded. The winds and conditions at Hula from May to November are ideal for kitesurfing whether you’re a wave rider or a flat-water fan.

Hisiu Beach, 100km west of Moresby, is the perfect spot for a swim or surf and has a village-operated resort with bungalow accommodation almost on the sand. Be sure to bring your own food, cooking utensils and bedding.

Sunset Lodge at Lea Lea is 30 minutes from Port Moresby off Napa Napa Road. Perched right on the beach, the lodge has BBQs and a large deck with a bar that hosts live local bands on weekends.

Catholic missionaries have lived on Yule Island since 1885. This is a popular spot for peaceful getaways and seafood delights. A unique accommodation favourite is the Carmelite convent in the original nuns' cells. Drive two hours west of the capital along the Hiritano Highway. Turn off to Poukama where a canoe will bring you to the island. Alternatively, you can fly directly to Kairuku Village.
